Indian spin bowler Varun Chakravarthy is all set to make his national debut for India in the Sri Lanka series. The 29 year old endured a decent outing with Kolkata Knight Riders in the 1st leg of the IPL this season. In 7 matches in the 1st leg of the IPL this season, Chakravarthy scalped a total of 7 wickets for KKR. Chakravarthy was also quite effective with the ball for KKR in the IPL last season. After impressing national selectors with some superb performances in the IPL, Chakravarthy finally received a national callup. The Indian spin bowler will want to perform well in the Sri Lanka series. This will boost his chances to make it into India’s T20 World Cup squad. That said, here are 2 reasons why Varun Chakravarthy could make it into India’s T20 World Cup squad:
1. A superb IPL outing with Kolkata Knight Riders
Chakravarthy was KKR’s best bowler in the IPL last season. In just 13 matches in IPL 2020, Chakravarthy scalped an impressive 17 wickets for KKR. The 29 year old also maintained a superb bowling economy of 6.84 in IPL 2020. Varun Chakravarthy also performed well for KKR in the 1st leg of IPL 2021. Hence, there is a strong chance that Chakravarthy could deliver in similar fashion for India in the ICC T20 World Cup 2021.
2. Poor form of India’s current spin bowlers
India’s current spin bowling duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav have been in poor form in the limited overs format. Chahal managed to scalp only 3 wickets in the T20I series against England. On the other hand, Kuldeep Yadav last played a T20I match for India back in July 2020. Hence, it is highly unlikely that either Yuzvendra Chahal or Kuldeep Yadav will start for India in the T20 World Cup. Instead, India could opt for Varun Chakravarthy, who has been in fine form lately.
