England had been one of the top Test teams in the world for over a decade. They performed well at both home and overseas matches. But in past few years, the team has failed to maintain its performance in Test matches. The English team lost four out of five Test matches they played. Thereby, when the Joe Root led team face India later this year, they would have a lot of pressure on them.

There was a time when registering a win against England at home Test series was not an easy feat. But in the last ten years, two teams have successfully defeated England at home. It further highlighted the shortcomings of the English team.

New Zealand defeated England in 2021

The Kiwis visited England for the first time in 2021 since June 2015. Although the English team was not at full strength, fans hoped that they would win against New Zealand.

In fact, in an interview before the Test match, Joe Root had stated that a win against New Zealand would help the team prepare for the Ashes. But, England ended up losing the first Test series in the summer of 2021.

In the first Test, England had an opportunity of winning the game but the team chose a defensive approach. The English team drew the game instead of going for a win. The defensive approach backfired for England as New Zealand defeated them in the second Test by eight wickets. It was an easy win for the Kiwis as they won without most of their star players in the playing XI.

Under the leadership of Tom Latham, New Zealand secure a 1-0 win in the 2 match series against England.

Sri Lanka defeated England in 2014

To date, Sri Lanka is the only Asian team to win against England in a Test series on English soil. Like New Zealand vs England test series, the first Test between the two teams ended in a draw.

England could have registered a 1-0 win but Sri Lanka ended the 5th day with 201/9 in a 390 runs chase. Thereby, the match ended in a draw.

The second Test of the series was held at Leeds. In that Test, Sri Lanka defeated England by 100 runs. Angelo Mathews played an important role and helped Sri Lanka in securing the win. He took four wickets in the first innings and also scored 160 runs in the second innings of the Test. His performance solidified Sri Lanka’s win on English soil.
