Although cricket is a team game, it is driven by individual talent. One of the best ways of defining an established batsman is by the number of centuries he scored. It is all the more important in Test cricket when scores in the first innings lay the foundation of the rest of the match. A Test century increases the player’s credentials and helps the team.

Over the years, many world-class batsmen have successfully made centuries in Test cricket. Some of the top batsmen with the most centuries in Test cricket are as follow:

Rahul Dravid

Rahul Dravid had batted with immense patience and the ability to wear down attacks. He was the Indian team’s wall at number three. To date, Dravid is one of the greatest cricketers to ever play the game.

He had a glorious career of playing 164 Test matches and scored 36 centuries in them. Many of those centuries were important in helping India win some crucial matches.

Kumar Sangakkara

Sri Lankan batsman Kumar Sangakkara started his career as a wicketkeeper-batsman. But he gave his best performance with the bat after giving up the wicketkeeping gloves. Then he became a specialist batsman from his side. In his international career, Sangakkara has scored 38 centuries in 134 matches.

Sangakkara churned out most of those centuries in the last stretch of his career. It was when Sri Lanka dominated in the home series and won a Test in England. The Sri Lankan team is yet to find his replacement after he retired. It is a testament to Sangakkara’s class and pedigree in Test cricket.

Ricky Ponting

Australian right-handed batsman Ricky Ponting started his career batting at number six. But when he started to bat at number three, he owned that position for almost 12 years. Ponting believed in counter-attacking and he was the perfect batman to follow the steps of Mathew Hayden and Justin Langer.

In his Test career, Ponting scored 41 centuries in 168 matches. A majority of his centuries helped Australia successfully dominate Test Cricket for more than a decade.
