The World Test Championship (WTC) final between India and New Zealand will be held in Southampton from June 18 to June 22. Cricket fans are eagerly waiting for the event. The spot in the WTC final was confirmed after a 3-1 win over England in the Test Series in India.

Over the years, the Indian batsmen have come up with some memorable performances against New Zealand.

3. Vinoo Mankad (231) - 1956 Chennai Test

Vinoo Mankad is one of the greatest all-rounders in India’s Test history. He dominated New Zealand during the fifth test of the 5-match series in India in 1956. Chennai was the venue for the final test, and he opened the innings with a spectacular double hundred.

After winning the toss, Team India decided to bat first and Mankad occupied the crease for 525 minutes. During those minutes, he scored 231 runs with 21 fours. This was the same test that gave us the highest partnership record in Team India’s Test history. Mankad and Pankaj Roy (173) were part of a historic 413-run partnership for the opening wicket. Team India won that Test by 109 runs and an innings.

That was a very impressive performance put up by Vinoo Mankad and Team India.

2. Mohammad Azharuddin (192) - 1990 Auckland Test

In the 90s, Team India had a poor record away from home. Mohammad Azharuddin led the side in some of those games. He led from the front with the bat in the third India New Zealand Test in Auckland in February 1990. He had two impressive partnerships with lower-order batsmen.

Azhar first made 88 runs with Kiran More (50) and then added 86 with Atul Wassan (53). He was the last man out as Team India put up 482 on the board. In that high-scoring match, Andrew Jones and Martin Crowe easily made their way to hundreds in New Zealand’s second innings. With 393 for victory, Team India made 149 for no loss and the match was a draw.

1. Rahul Dravid (222) – 2003 Ahmedabad Test

Rahul Dravid has a number of marathon knocks for team India during his elaborated and impressive career. One such memorable innings was against New Zealand in the first test of the two-match series in 2003 at Ahmedabad.

After winning the toss, Team India elected to bat first. Dravid then set the foundation for a massive first innings total with a double hundred. He batted with utmost patience and in 578 minutes, compiled 222 runs. He faced 387 balls during that period. The Indian legend, Dravid, had hit 28 fours and one six during that knock. He contributed 73 in the second innings and Team India set a tough target of 370 for New Zealand. The Unbeaten 83 by McMillan ensured a draw for the kiwis. Over the course of the knock, Dravid had a 130 run partnership with VVS Laxman (64) and 182 runs stand with Sourav Ganguly (100 not out).

Team India and New Zealand have faced each other in 59 Tests to date. The Indians have been the dominant side with 21 wins, with New Zealand managing to triumph in 12 encounters. 26 Tests have produced no results.
