The defending champions of the Indian T20 League, Gujarat started their 16th edition campaign with a thrilling victory against the Chennai-based franchise on Friday, March 31. But during the match, they suffered a huge blow as their new addition to the team, Kane Williamson injured his knee while saving a six.
However, it looked like he will play the tournament after his recovery but the speculations were ended by the franchise as Williamson is now ruled of the entire tournament and has gone back to his home for treatment.
In this article, we take a look at 3 players Gujarat might rope in to replace Williamson for the remaining matches of the cash-rich league:
1. Dasun Shanaka
It was pretty shocking when Sri Lanka's Cricket Team captain Dasun Shanaka went unsold in the mini-auction for the 16th season as he is consistently performing well for his national side, especially in the shortest format. He has shown many times that he can hit big sixes and can even provide some much-needed breakthroughs as well. He also led his side to win the last year's Asia Cup. He can be a great player to strengthen Gujarat's lower-middle order if he replaces Williamson.
2. Daryl Mitchell
New Zealand all-rounder, Daryl Mitchell didn't get any bid in the mini-auction as he failed to perform in the cash-rich league while playing for the Rajasthan-based franchise. However, his performance for the national side is wonderful in recent years. If he is added to the squad, he will make the squad even stronger.
3. Travis Head
The star Australian left-hander Travis Head, who is doing wonders in the longest format, has the ability to perform well in the shortest format as well. The star left-hander was, recently, seen in action against India in the ODI series and played with a brilliant strike rate as well.
He has, earlier, played for the Bangalore-based franchise but couldn't perform better. If he gets a chance to play in place of Williamson for Gujarat, the franchise will have another opening batter option.
