Rohit Sharma will be unavailable for the ODI and T20I matches against Australia. Owing to this, there is an open slot to bat alongside Shikhar Dhawan. Although Rohit Sharma will play the Test Series against Australia, he is sidelined for the time being.

Rohit Sharma’s injury could turn out to be a boon for youngsters who are dying to play international cricket. The remaining 2 formats will see cut-throat competition to replace Rohit Sharma. Here we list out 3 players who might get the chance to do so:

1. Shubman Gill

Top on this list and the most likely candidate to replace Rohit Sharma is Shubman Gill. Regularly starting for India A, Gill has also opened for Kolkata Knight Riders in all 14 matches this season. Shubman Gill is the highest run-scorer for KKR, finishing with 440 runs and a strike rate of 117.96.

The management has preferred Gill over Prithvi Shaw, who has played below par in the IPL. A capped player, Gill has scored 2280 runs in 51 matches for India A, averaging at 45.60.

2. Mayank Agarwal

Second on this list is Mayank Agarwal. Included in the 2019 World Cup starting line-up, Mayank Agarwal failed to rise to the occasion. Scoring only 36 runs in 3 games against New Zealand, he was eventually dropped by the team management.

However, due to his recent heroics in IPL 2020, Mayank Agarwal captured the attention of the selectors once again, leading to his selection for the T20I Series.

The 29-year-old KXIP batsman has managed to score 4087 runs in 87 matches throughout his career, averaging 28.03.

3. Sanju Samson

Last on this list is Sanju Samson. Samson is the most likely to replace Rohit Sharma in the T20I series, however, for ODIs, things look a little bleak. To everyone’s surprise, the team selection panel chose Sanju Samson over Rishabh Pant, making it evident that they want Samson to consistently start for the T20I team.

During the New Zealand Tour, Sanju Samson managed to play 2 T20Is. Rishabh Pant, on the other hand, wasn’t lucky and was benched in all 8 games.

The young RR batsman needs to deliver, with Ishan Kishan breathing down his neck. The former has scored only 16 runs in 3 matches. The latter was MI’s standout performer this season, smashing 516 runs in just 14 games. With a strike rate of 145.76, Sanju Samson needs to pull up his socks.
