CSK registered their 3rd win in IPL 202I by defeating KKR at the Wankhede stadium in Mumbai. Batting first, CSK posted a mammoth total of 220 on the board. In reply, KKR were bowled out for 202, falling short by 18 runs. With this victory, CSK is now top of the IPL 2021 points table. On the other hand, KKR is now 6th in the IPL 2021 points table. That said, here are 3 reasons why CSK defeated KKR in IPL 2021:

3. KKR’s bowlers failed to scalp wickets in the powerplay overs

CSK opener Ruturaj Gaikwad looked out of form in the first 3 games for CSK in IPL 2021. However, this time, Gaikwad looked in full flow in the bat. In just 42 balls, Gaikwad amassed 64 runs, smacking a total of 6 fours and 4 sixes. On the other hand, Faf du Plessis was looking unplayable. In 60 balls, du Plessis amassed an impressive 95 runs. CSK’s openers took KKR’s bowlers to the cleaners, who emerged wicketless in the powerplay overs for the 1st time this season.

2. CSK’s batsmen blasted runs in the death overs

Prior to Gaikwad’s dismissal, Moeen Ali stepped to bat at no 3. Facing just 12 balls, Ali scored 25 runs, averaging at a strike rate of 208.33. Prior to Ali’s dismissal, MS Dhoni stepped to bat at No 4, to everyone’s surprise. Dhoni scored 17 runs in 8 balls, averaging at a strike rate of 212.50. After Dhoni got out, Jadeja took to the crease. The all-rounder smashed the final ball of the 20th over for a six. 4 of KKR’s bowlers leaked more than 10 runs per over. Only Varun Chakravarthy managed to average less than 7 runs per over. KKR’s abysmal bowling at the death helped CSK post a total of 200+ on the board.

1. KKR’s top 5 batsmen failed to make an impact

Unlike CSK, KKR got off to a miserable start. KKR opener Shubman Gill was dismissed for a duck. Nitish Rana, who looked in good form, only managed to score 9 runs in total. KKR’s no 3 batsman Rahul Tripathi could only amass a total of 8 runs against CSK. KKR skipper Eoin Morgan failed to make an impact with the bat, amassing only 7 runs. Sunil Narine got out for just 4 runs. Only Dinesh Karthik, Andre Russell, and Pat Cummins looked threatening with the bat against CSK. However, their contributions went in vain as CSK won the match by 18 runs.
