Rishabh Pant’s Delhi Capitals got the better of MS Dhoni’s Chennai Super Kings in the 2nd match of IPL 2021. CSK’s total of 188 was chased down with quite ease by the Delhi side. DC openers Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw were the chief architects behind CSK’s downfall. That said, here is a list of 3 reasons why DC won the 2nd match of IPL 2021:
3. CSK’s team selection and batting lineup
CSK all rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran were slotted at the no 6 and 8 positions respectively. Both the players were slotted in the same positions in which they played in the IPL last season. Meanwhile, West Indian cricketer Dwayne Bravo played at the no 9 position. After Sam Curran’s exploits with the bat against DC, everyone hinted at one question. Why was Sam Curran kept so low in the batting order? Had he played at the no 4 or 5 position, things would be entirely different for CSK. On the other hand, CSK’s bowlers were sent to the cleaners by DC’s openers. Apart from Dwayne Bravo, every bowler was routinely being smashed out of the park. CSK will need to completely revamp their lineup if they want to contend for the IPL this year.
2. DC dominated in the powerplay overs
The opening duo of Faf du Plessis and Ruturaj Gaikwad failed to make an impact in the 2nd match of IPL 2021. Both du Plessis and Gaikwad were dismissed rather easily by the DC bowlers. In the 6 powerplay overs, CSK could only muster 33 runs at the loss of 2 wickets, averaging just 5.5 runs per over. Compared to that, the DC openers ran riot against CSK bowlers in the powerplay overs. In 6 overs, DC put up 65 runs on the board, averaging at over 10 runs per over.
1. Shikhar Dhawan
Shikhar Dhawan was clearly the difference in the 2nd match of IPL 2021. Dhawan picked up 3 crucial catches for the DC side while fielding. However, what was most eye-catching about Dhawan was his stupendous knock with the bat. Facing just 54 balls, Dhawan amassed a total of 85 runs. His terrific innings featured a total of 10 fours and 2 mammoth sixes. Even though Prithvi Shaw played very well, scoring 72 runs, Dhawan stole the show against CSK. Unfortunately, Dhawan failed to notch a century as he was dismissed by Shardul Thakur in the 16th over.
