DC vs PBKS

DC registered their 6th win of the season as they beat PBKS in the 29th match of IPL 2021. Batting first, PBKS posted a total of 166 on the board. In reply, DC chased the total with 7 wickets in hand and 14 balls left to play. With this victory, DC has retained the No 1 spot in the IPL 2021 points table. That said, here are 3 reasons why DC beat PBKS in the 29th match of IPL 2021:

3. PBKS’s poor batting performance in the powerplay overs

PBKS’s batting order failed to take advantage of the powerplay overs against DC. In the first 6 overs of their innings, PBKS could only muster 39 runs in total. Moreover, they also lost 2 wickets in the powerplay overs. The 1st PBKS batsman to get out in the powerplay overs was Prabhsimran Singh. In 16 balls, Singh could only manage to amass 12 runs in total. Chris Gayle also failed to deliver with the bat, scoring only 13 runs in 9 balls. If Mayank Agarwal had a more reliable partner, PBKS could have posted a total of 180+ against DC.

2. DC’s terrific opening partnership

Chasing 167, DC needed their openers to provide them an ideal start. The opening duo of Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw did exactly that. In the powerplay overs, Dhawan and Shaw notched a solid 63 run partnership to put DC in a commanding position. Prithvi Shaw got out in the 6th over, scoring 39 runs in 22 balls. However, Dhawan kept firing with the bat for DC till the end. Dhawan’s unbeaten knock of 69 guided DC to victory against PBKS in IPL 2021.

1. PBKS’s star bowlers fail to deliver against DC

PBKS needed to pick wickets regularly if they wanted to win against DC. However, the PBKS bowlers failed to do so. PBKS failed to pick a single wicket in the powerplay overs against DC. Moreover, DC amassed 63 runs in the powerplay overs, averaging more than 10 runs per over. This was far more than the required run rate of almost 8.5 runs per over. Apart from Harpreet Brar and Deepak Hooda, every PBKS bowler conceded more than 9.5 runs per over. A dismal bowling performance from PBKS handed DC their 6th victory in the IPL this year.
