India entered the ICC World Test Championship final as the favorite to win. However, New Zealand managed to defeat India by 8 wickets to win the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship. Despite having some of the best Test players in their team, the Indian Test team failed to win. Here are 3 reasons why India lost the World Test Championship final against New Zealand:

⦁ India’s bowlers failed to get the better of New Zealand’s lower order

Indian bowlers Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma managed to restrict New Zealand to 162/6 in the 1st innings of the Test. However, New Zealand managed to amass a total of 87 runs for the last wickets. This put New Zealand in a commanding position against India in the World Test Championship final. New Zealand managed to take a 32 run lead in the 2nd innings of the World Test Championship final. This put the Indian side under a lot of pressure and was arguably the game-changing moment of the WTC final.

⦁ Poor shot selection by Team India on Day 6

The Indian spin bowlers performed quite well for India in the World Test Championship final. Jadeja bowled a total of 15 overs in the WTC final, conceding only 45 runs and scalping 1 wicket in total. R Ashwin bowled a total of 25 overs for India, scalping an impressive 4 wickets in total. Clearly, India’s spin bowlers delivered for their team. However, India coil has used an extra pace bowling option in the WTC final against New Zealand. Furthermore, a poor selection of shots from India’s batsmen cost them the WTC final against New Zealand. If the shot selection was better, things could have been different in the WTC final.

⦁ Jasprit Bumrah failed to impress with the ball in the WTC final

Jasprit Bumrah is one of India’s finest bowlers in the Test format. However, he failed to impress with the ball in the WTC final against New Zealand. Bumrah bowled a total of 27 overs in the World Test Championship final. However, he failed to pick a single wicket for India in the WTC final against New Zealand. Bumrah’s dismal performance is one of the reasons why India lost against New Zealand in the WTC final.
