RR registered their 4th loss in IPL 2021 after losing against MI. Batting first, RR posted a total of 171 on the board with a loss of 3 wickets. In reply, MI chased the total with 7 wickets in hand and 9 balls left to play. MI has now won 3 out of 6 matches in IPL 2021. That said, here are 3 reasons why MI beat RR in the 24th match of IPL 2021:
3. Bumrah’s economical spell with the ball
Jasprit Bumrah has been one of MI’s most reliable bowlers for quite some time in the IPL. MI skipper Rohit Sharma allotted Bumrah 2 out of the 6 powerplay overs against RR. In his 2 overs in the powerplay, Bumrah conceded only 7 runs, keeping Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal at bay. Bumrah also got the wicket of Shivam Dube, who scored 35 runs in 31 balls. Bowling a total of 4 overs against RR, Bumrah conceded only 15 runs, showcasing his superb bowling ability yet again.
2. RR’s confusing batting order decisions
The opening duo of Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal got RR off to a flying start. Prior to Buttler’s dismissal, RR skipper Sanju Samson and Yashasvi Jaiswal kept firing for RR. However, prior to Jaiswal’s dismissal, Shivam Dube entered to bat for RR, in what was quite an eye-raising decision. Everyone expected David Miller to bat out the death overs of RR’s innings. Instead, Dube completely sapped out the momentum of RR’s innings. His innings of 35 in 31 balls prevented RR from posting a total of 190+ on the board.
1. Mustafizur Rahman’s expensive spell with the ball
With RR out of overseas playing options, Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman started yet again for the inaugural IPL champions. However, his costly spell with the ball cost RR the match against MI. In just 3.3 overs, Rahman leaked 37 runs in total, averaging a dismal economy of 10.57 runs per over. Even though he scalped the wicket of Krunal Pandya, the damage was already dealt. Prior to Krunal Pandya’s dismissal, MI needed only 26 runs in 20 balls to win the match. The duo of Kieron Pollard and Quinton de Kock guided MI to the winning line as MI registered their 3rd win in IPL 2021.
