MI emerged victorious over KKR as the 5-time champions won the match by 10 runs. The teams have collided on 27 occasions in IPL history. 21 out of 27 matches have been won by MI. It looked quite certain that KKR would win the match. With a meager total of 152 to chase, KKR was just about to cross the finishing line. However, in the last 5 overs, MI made a sensational comeback. Some horrible decision-making from KKR’s batting order led to their downfall against MI.

That said, here are 3 reasons why MI defeated KKR in IPL 2021:

3. Shubman Gill carelessly threw his wicket away

In a pitch where bowlers leak runs in the powerplay overs, batsmen are expected to go all guns blazing. KKR opener Shubman Gill looked set to chase the total of 153. However, Gill opted to take on MI bowler Rahul Chahar. Rahul Chahar was looking quite threatening with the ball in the initial overs. Gill smashed Rahul Chahar’s delivery and failed to clear the ropes. The 21-year-old amassed only 33 runs from 24 balls. In a pitch where it takes time to adapt for a new batsman, Shubman Gill should have acted more responsibly. Instead of sealing the deal for KKR, Gill acted immaturely and put his team under pressure.

2. Poor batting display by KKR’s middle order

A series of poor batting decisions by KKR’s middle-order dearly cost KKR the match against MI. Rahul Tripathi simply could not replicate his performance against MI, as he got out for only 5 runs. Down the order, KKR skipper Eoin Morgan had another poor outing with the bat in IPL 2021 and got for just 7 runs. While Andre Russell impressed with the ball, he failed to deliver the bat. Shakib al Hasan had another disappointing performance with the bat, scoring only 9 runs. Overall, a careless batting display and some stunning bowling by MI at the death cost KKR the game.

1. KKR’s finishers got finished by MI

A lot was expected from Dinesh Karthik after a superb batting performance against SRH recently. Unfortunately, Karthik got run out as KKR ran out of finishers. Owing to some superb bowling by Trent Boult and Rahul Chahar, KKR’s finishers were never allowed time to settle. If KKR wishes to contend for the IPL this year, they need their finishers to deliver time and again. Or else, it could be another trophyless year for KKR in the IPL this year.
