IPL 2021

In the 17th match of IPL 2021, PBKS defeated MI by 9 wickets with 14 wickets to spare. With this victory, PBKS are now 5th in the IPL 2021 points table. Meanwhile, MI has slipped to no 4 in the points table. Batting first, MI managed to score only 131 runs in 20 overs. In reply, Punjab chased the total, losing only a single wicket in their innings. That said, here are 3 reasons why PBKS beat MI in the 17th match of IPL 2021:

3. Ishan Kishan’s slow innings cost MI dearly

Ishan Kishan was Mumbai’s highest run-scorer in IPL 2020. However, the 22-year-old has struggled with the bat in IPL 2021 so far. Playing 5 matches, Kishan only managed 73 runs in this season so far. Ishan Kishan failed to get going, notching just 6 runs in 17 balls. Owing to Kishan’s sluggish innings, MI failed to keep ticking runs on the board. In the end, MI somewhat posted a total of 120+ on the board. If Kishan wouldn’t take so long to settle, MI could have easily notched 150+ runs.

2. Pandya brothers fail to deliver for MI yet again

The duo of Hardik Pandya and Krunal Pandya has looked sluggish in the season so far. Though Krunal has scalped wickets with the ball, he has performed poorly with the bat. On the other hand, Hardik Pandya has simply been out of form in the IPL 2021 so far. In 5 matches, Hardik has amassed a meager of 36 runs, averaging a dismal strike rate of 97. The duo could manage to amass only 4 runs in total in the match against PBKS. Their lackluster performance has negatively impacted the MI side. The Pandya brothers need to find their lost form if MI wants to regain the IPL trophy this year.

1. KL Rahul’s stable innings sealed the deal for PBKS

Chasing 132, all PBKS needed to ensure was that they did not lose wickets in quick succession. The opening duo of KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal built a solid partnership of 53 before Agarwal’s dismissal. Chris Gayle provided support to KL Rahul, amassing 43 runs in 35 runs. However, it was KL Rahul who guided Punjab to the victory line. Rahul’s knock of 60 off 52 balls shattered Mumbai’s hopes of winning the match. Owing to his crucial knock with the bat, KL Rahul was adjudged Man of the Match.
