The IPL 2021 witnessed another unsuccessful run chase unfold in an encounter between RCB and SRH. Batting first, RCB posted a below-par total of 149 with a loss of 8 wickets. In reply, David Warner’s knock of 54 put SRH in a commanding position. However, some sensational bowling from RCB and some careless batting from SRH batsmen saw RCB win the match by 6 runs. With this victory, RCB sits at the top of the table with 2 wins in 2 games. Meanwhile, SRH is 7th in the table, with 2 losses in 2 games. That said, here are 3 reasons why RCB defeated SRH in their 1st encounter in IPL 2021:

3. Poor bowling in the death overs by SRH

In the Chepauk stadium, the pitch is renowned for not being a high scoring pitch. SRH failed to utilise this to their advantage. Despite having the likes of T Natarajan, Jason Holder and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, SRH conceded plenty of runs in the death overs. In the final 3 overs of RCB’s innings, SRH bowlers leaked a total of 39 runs. On the other hand, RCB picked 7 wickets and conceded only 35 runs in the last 5 overs of the match. Clearly, one reason why SRH lost was their low quality of bowling.

2. Careless batting by Manish Pandey and Jonny Bairstow

Jonny Bairstow disappointed with the bat yet again, scoring just 12 runs from 13 balls. Bairstow tried to take on Shahbaz Ahmed, even though his team were in cruise control of the match. Eventually, he was caught by AB de Villiers. On the other hand. Manish Pandey had the golden opportunity to win the match for SRH. Manish Pandey looked settled, allowing Warner to take charge of the hard hitting. However, prior to Warner’s dismissal, the onus was on Pandey to deliver. Unfortunately, Ahmed got the better of Pandey, putting the SRH middle order under pressure.

1. RCB’s bowlers bowled brilliantly in the death

RCB bowler Shahbaz Ahmed pulled RCB from the jaws of defeat after bowling a stunning 17th over. Ahmed scalped 3 crucial wickets, conceding only 1 run in the entire over. Prior to that, Harshal Patel and Mohammed Siraj bowled 2 terrific overs to take the match beyond the reach of SRH. In the end, SRH needed 8 balls off the final ball. Thanks to RCB’s bowlers, RCB won a thrilling encounter by a fine margin of 6 runs.
