Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill has struggled with the bat in IPL 2021 so far. In 6 matches, Gill has amassed just 89 runs. Moreover, his dismal batting average of just 14.83 clearly highlights that Gill is out of form this season. The 20-year-old was KKR’s best batsman in the IPL last year. In 14 matches for KKR in IPL 2020, Gill amassed a total of 440 runs in the IPL last year. That said, here are 3 reasons why Gill has underperformed for KKR in IPL 2021 so far:

3. Shubman Gill does not have a fixed role on the KKR side

In IPL 2020, Shubman Gill had a clearly defined role. The 20-year-old was in command of KKR’s innings for the start. Gill was more of an aggressive batsman in the IPL last year. However, in IPL 2021, it feels that Gill has lost that aggression. Instead, Nitish Rana looks in charge of the KKR batting lineup this year. Gill’s failure to register a big score in IPL 2021 has also affected KKR in a negative way. The KKR management needs to identify Gill’s role in the KKR side, which will benefit both Gill and the team.

2. Shubman Gill is accountable for playing careless shots

The 20-year-old has been criticized for playing rash shots in IPL 2021. In KKR’s match against SRH in IPL 2021, Gill needlessly took on Rashid Khan. Eventually, Gill got out for just 15 runs. Gill continued to play reckless shots and put the middle order under pressure. Instead of learning from his mistakes, the 20-year-old kept committing the same mistakes in the next matches. Unsurprisingly, Gill’s highest total in the IPL this year is a meager 33. The 20-year-old needs to show some maturity and stop carelessly throwing away his wicket.

1. Shubman Gill needs to improve his batting technique

Gill is a brilliant player of spin bowling. However, the 20-year-old has struggled against pace bowling for quite some time. In the limited-overs series against England, Gill was a victim of pace bowling on quite a few occasions. In the match between KKR and PBKS in IPL 2021, Mohammed Shami exploited Gill’s weakness. Bowling an in-swinger, Shami got the better of Gill, who got out for just 9 runs. KKR has moved to Chennai for the rest of their games in IPL 2021. The pitch in Chennai is quite a spin-friendly pitch, which is in favor of Gill. The 20-year-old still has time to resurrect his old form in the upcoming games this season.
