One major reason why PBKS managed to win against RR is because of Punjab’s highly efficient batting lineup. In a T20 match, posting a total of 200+ will always put the opposition team under great pressure. While PBKS opener Mayank Agarwal failed to impress, Punjab skipper KL Rahul was at his brilliant best. Rahul’s brilliant knock of 91 put Punjab in a commanding position. Furthermore, contributions from Chris Gayle and Deepak Hooda ensured that PBKS crossed the 200 run mark.
That said, here are 3 takeaways from Punjab’s batting against RR in the 4th match of IPL 2021:
1. KL Rahul continues his red hot form in the IPL
Rahul was the orange cap winner in IPL 2020. In 14 matches, KL Rahul amassed an impressive 670 runs with a brilliant batting average of 55.83. The PBKS skipper delivered more than expected, notching an impressive 91 in his 1st game of IPL 2021. Rahul’s 22nd fifty came off just 30 balls as he sent RR’s bowlers to the cleaners. KL Rahul also received great support from the other end in the form of Deepak Hooda. Hooda notched a crucial fifty off just 20 balls as the duo of Rahul and Hooda dominated RR’s bowlers.
2. Chris Gayle looks in fine touch with the bat
The Universe Boss looked to be in fine form, amassing 40 runs in just 28 balls. Alongside skipper KL Rahul, Gayle notched an important partnership of 67 runs to put PBKS in a commanding position. Gayle was given a second chance after Ben Stokes dropped him early in the innings. However, in the 9th over, Gayle found Ben Stokes again. This time, the England all-rounder, did not drop Gayle. Riyan Parag scalped the crucial wicket of Chris Gayle. Gayle’s quickfire 40 included a total of 4 boundaries and 2 sixes.
3. PBKS finished off their innings in grand fashion
At the end of the 16th over, PBKS’s score was 172/2. Deepak Hooda and KL Rahul were taking the game to RR. However, midway in the 17th over, Riyan Parag dismissed Hooda for a superb 64. However, KL Rahul kept exploiting RR’s bowlers, with Punjab reaching 200 in the 18th overs. However, Rahul ran out of luck, as he was dismissed for 91 in the 19th over. Punjab somehow managed to post a mammoth total of 221 on the board with a loss of 6 wickets.
