The much-awaited T20 Asia Cup 2022 will commence on August 27 in United Arab Emirates (UAE). Sri Lanka are the host of the 15th edition of the tournament. There will be six teams in the tournament and are divided into two groups of three each.
India, Pakistan, and a qualifier team (One of Hong Kong, Kuwait, Singapore, and UAE) are in group A, whereas Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan form the second group. The inaugural match of the tournament sees Sri Lanka take on Afghanistan in Dubai. It will be interesting to see who takes the trophy this time around.
Let's look at the top three teams with the most number of titles:
1) India - 7 times:
India are the most successful side in the history of the Asia Cup, having won the tournament seven times. The Men in Blue clinched the Asia Cup in 1984, 1988, 1990-91, 1995, 2010, 2016, and 2018 and have a win percentage of 68.68 - the highest among all the teams in the tournament’s history. The defending champions will look to win the title for the third time in a row.
The Rohit Sharma-led side has picked a full-strength squad. Though the bowling duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Hashal Patel will not take part due to injury, India still has a formidable side full of match-winners. The form of the ace-batter Virat Kohli will be a cause for concern and India will hope the former captain finds his mojo back. India have adopted a fearless approach to their batting off late and will be a force to reckon with in the tournament.
2) Sri Lanka - 5 times:
Sri Lanka are the second most decorated team in the Asia Cup, having claimed the trophy on five occasions in 1986, 1997, 2004, 2008, and 2014. They have a win percentage of 64.81 in Asia Cup history.
The Sri Lanka side are on a course of revival when it comes to limited overs cricket. They had a decent show at the last year's T20 World Cup and recently gave the T20 champions Australia a run for their money. The Sri Lankan side have match-winners like skipper Dasun Shanaka, Charith Asalanka, Bhanuka Rajapaksa, and Wanindu Hasaranga who have proved their worth in the T20 circuit around the globe.
3) Pakistan - 2 times:
Pakistan Cricket Team feature third on the list having won the Asia Cup twice in 2000 and 2012. They have a win percentage of 58.33. The Men in Green are a very formidable side. They have shown their metal in the last year's T20 World Cup where they reached the semi-finals.
The Babar-led side has suffered a blow ahead of the tournament as they lost their pace attack leader Shaheen Afridi due to injury. Skipper Babar Azam and Mohammed Rizwan are the pillars of the Pakistan lineup and the onus will be on them to shepherd the batting.
