While many Chelsea fans would not like it, it wouldn’t be incorrect to state that the London club owe major credit to Roman Abramovich’s cash injection for their modern-day success.

On the back of a sensational takeover, Chelsea have become the most successful English club in the last twenty years winning five Premier League, two Champions League and a myriad of other trophies in the process. For comparison, Manchester City have six Premier League trophies in that time with no Champions League and Liverpool have just one Premier League and one Champions League. The other clubs don’t even compare when it comes to silverware won in the last two decades.

However, money is not always certain of bringing success to the club as Manchester City and PSG continue to find out. Despite spending billions, the Champions League have eluded both these mega clubs.

This is where Chelsea’s youth academy comes into the picture. In the last couple of years, Chelsea have created an eye-catching army of young prospects many of which keep knocking on the doors of the first team. Players like Mason Mount, Reece James, Ruben Loftus Cheek and many others have played at the highest level

There are however many young Chelsea players who fail to make it into Chelsea’s first XI, go to some other club and become an even bigger name. Let’s look at four young Chelsea players who went on to become superstars in other clubs.

Kevin De Bruyne

Probably the biggest name on this list, De Bruyne is on his way to becoming the greatest midfielder the Premier League has ever seen. Recently the Belgian international broke Steven Gerrard's assist record of 92 assists in less than half the games (214 vs 504).

His immense talent has won him five Premier League trophies at Manchester City and the oncoming silverware does not seem like stopping any time soon.

Mohammad Salah

Salah has scored 186 goals for Liverpool and have taken them to their first ever Premier League win along with a Champions League win in 2019. The Egyptian is already a Liverpool legend, but he too, like many others found their roots at Chelsea.

Salah made 13 appearances for the West London club between 2014 and 2016 and scored twice. Due to tough competition in the team, he was loaned to Fiorentina and Roma and later ended up at Liverpool in 2017. In the process, Chelsea lost another legendary player.

Tammy Abraham

While the above two did not come through the Chelsea ranks, Tammy Abraham was a Chelsea player through and through. He joined the youth academy way back in 2004 when he was six years old.

With hard work, the 6ft 5in striker made it into the first team and began making regular appearances for the Blues. In 58 games, Abraham scored 21 times for Chelsea but still found himself out of the team. He is now playing at Roma and has helped them win Europa Conference in 2021 and has become a fan favourite at the Italian club.

Jamal Musiala

Jamal Musiala joined Chelsea youth academy in 2011 and stayed there for eight years. He however could not break into the first team and had to depart without playing any matches for the senior side.

In 2022 though the 19-year-old is playing as an attacking midfielder against Barcelona for Beyern Munich! The 6ft footballer has so far scored 15 goals for the German Giants in 62 games and continues to rise to the top of German football.
