India is the team to beat in the longest format of the game. Several Indian young talents have showcased their ability in the Test format. Owing to that, older and much more experienced Indian players miss out on the opportunity to represent their country. That said, here are 5 such Indian players whose comeback in the Test format seems impossible:
5. Harbhajan Singh
Harbhajan Singh is arguably one of the most decorated spinners in world cricket. The spinner has racked a remarkable 417 wickets in his Test career. Harbhajan Singh last played a Test match for India back in the year 2015. Hence, there is a possibility that Harbhajan might not make a return to the Test format. Furthermore, age is also not on his side, with the spinner already 40 years old now.
4. Murali Vijay
Murali Vijay was a regular starter in the Indian Test side until 2018. Since then, Vijay has not played any form of competitive cricket. In 61 Tests in his career, Vijay racked up 3982 runs in total. The 37-year-old has also not played any domestic cricketer for quite some time. Clearly, Vijay is not in contention to make a return to the Indian Test side.
3. Karun Nair
Karun Nair is the 2nd Indian cricketer to amass a triple century in the Test format on an international level. Nair was brought in to replace the injured Ajinkya Rahane in the 2016-17 Test series against England. However, after Rahane’s return from injury, Nair was sidelined by the Indian team management. Nair has played domestic cricket in recent times. However, he looks nowhere near his best. Hence, it is unlikely for Nair to make a return to the Test format anytime soon.
2. Amit Mishra
Another Indian player who is on the brink of retirement is Indian spinner, Amit Mishra. Mishra last played a Test match for India back in the year 2016. The 38-year-old is definitely not at the peak of his career. Hence, Amit Mishra is highly unlikely to get a chance to represent India in the Test format again.
1. Shikhar Dhawan
Shikhar Dhawan has been in prolific form in the limited-overs format. However, he has failed to replicate a similar performance in the Test format. Dhawan last played a Test for India in the year 2018. Dhawan is already 35 now, and the Indian Test team already has found Shubman Gill as a replacement. Hence, a return to the Indian Test side looks highly unlikely for Shikhar Dhawan in the near future.
