The IPL has helped several players make their way into the Indian national squad. Not only that, but it also added some players to redeem their cricketing careers. However, a poor outing in IPL could ruin a chance for a player to make it to the national side. Here is a list of 5 players who could have a do or die situation in IPL 2021:
5. Ravichandran Ashwin
R Ashwin is arguably India’s best spinner in the Test format. However, Ashwin hasn’t been considered for selection in the limited-overs format recently. Ashwin had a fantastic IPL 2020 season, picking up 13 wickets in the entire season. If Ashwin manages to have another successful campaign with DC in IPL 2021, we might finally get to see him play for India in the limited-overs series after 4 long years.
4. Manish Pandey
Manish Pandey had his fair share of chances to impress selectors in the limited-overs series. However, after a series of disappointing outings with India, Pandey was eventually dropped from the starting lineup. The 31-year-old is also way down the pecking order, with Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav leading the race for a place in the T20 World Cup squad. IPL 2021 could be Pandey’s final chance to impress the selectors and fight for a place in the Indian team.
3. Kedhar Jadhav
Kedhar Jadhav started his international career with some superb performances with the bat for India. However, as time progressed, Jadhav’s performance deteriorated. After some inconsistent and careless batting in the limited-overs series, Jadhav was finally dropped from the Indian side. The IPL 2020 was a great chance for Jadhav to make a return. However, in 8 matches, Jadhav could only manage 62 runs with a dismal strike rate of 93.93. Already 36 years old, it is really a make-a-break season for Jadhav in the IPL this year.
2. Shikhar Dhawan
Despite having a terrific outing in IPL 2020, Shikhar Dhawan might lose the opening spot in the T20 World Cup. MI cricketer Ishan Kishan has been in the selector’s plans for quite a while. MI captain Rohit Sharma has also been in stellar form lately. Furthermore, Kohli has also expressed his desire to open for India in the upcoming World Cups. With so much competition, Dhawan will have to be at his best if he wants to cement his position as an opener for India in the future.
1. Kuldeep Yadav
Kuldeep Yadav was dropped from the T20 squad which faced England after a disastrous outing with India recently. Furthermore, his IPL track records do him no favor to contend for a position on the Indian side. In 14 matches across IPL 2018 and 2019, Kuldeep managed to pick only 5 wickets in total. The IPL 2021 is surely Kuldeep’s last chance to prove his mettle for a place in the T20 World Cup.
