Former Indian cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar reckons that Shubman Gill has to improve his footwork ahead of the Test series in England. The Indian team management has supported Shubman Gill to open the innings in Tests for quite some time now. The youngster made his debut in Melbourne last year against Australia. The 21-year-old has slammed three half-centuries so far with a best of 91 against Australia.

The Punjab-born batsman ended up the series in Australia by scoring 259 runs at an average of 51.8, which impressed the entire cricket fraternity. With his stunning performance, the youngster has fixed his place at the top of the order in the Indian Test side. Shubman Gill performed well against Australia but then struggled at home against England. From then, his poor form continued in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) Final against New Zealand as well.

Gill's current footwork will work when you are playing in Australia: Sanjay Manjrekar

Sanjay Manjrekar further reckoned that Shubman Gill's current footwork would work when you are playing in Australia on grounds like Adelaide, where the ball just shoots along the ground. This is when planting the front foot forward is very crucial. But while batting in England, Sanjay feels the young opening batsman should improve his footwork.

Shubman Gill had an encouraging start to his innings, but he failed to convert it into a big score. Fast bowler Neil Wagner dismissed the youngster for 28 in the first innings. Then, in the second innings, Gill was pinned in front of the stumps by NZ senior pacer Tim Southee for just 8 runs.

The fifth day's play certainly belonged to Indian pacer Mohammed Shami as he singlehandedly brought his side back in the contest. After a great morning spell, Mohammed Shami got a couple of more wickets in the post-lunch session. The 30-year-old dismissed Colin de Grandhomme with a delivery that angled in and Kyle Jamieson with a bouncer. With a full day's play anticipated, the Indian cricket team would like to bat at least a session and a half to put themselves in a safe position before giving NZ 50 odd overs and 200 plus target if they want to enforce a result.
