Australian spin bowler Nathan Lyon recently revealed the advice he received from Australian coach Justin Langer. Lyon reckons that this helped him resurrect his Test career by leaps and bounds. Lyon should start performing consistently and win games for Australia in order to cement his spot in the playing XI.
This advice came as a motivation for the off-spinner. Prior to the retirement of the legendary Shane Warne, none of the Aussie off spinners was able to fill his shoes. However, this was not the case with Nathan Lyon. Lyon took full advantage of this opportunity. Now, he is one of the most successful Test bowlers, with 396 wickets to his name. In just 99 Tests, the Aussie off-spinner picked up 18 five-wicket hauls and 16 four-wicket hauls. These stats clearly reveal why Nathan Lyon is unlike all the other Australian off-spinners.
Faced a lot of external pressure at the start of my career: Nathan Lyon
Life was not breezy for the Australian bowler during the start of his Test career. After participating in just 4 Sheffield Shield matches, Lyon made his cut in the Australian Test team. Several questions were raised regarding his selection in the Team. However, the bowler did not back down from critics. He answered them in style, becoming a regular starter for the Australia Test side.
The upcoming 4th Test of the 2020 Border-Gavaskar Trophy will be Lyon’s 100th Test match. Just 4 behind 400 Test wickets, Lyon looks confident to retain the Border-Gavaskar trophy.
Australia has quite a staggering record in the Test format at the Gabba in Brisbane. Since 1988, the Men in Yellow haven’t lost a Test match at the Gabba in Brisbane. Hence, Australia will head into the 4th Test with a psychological advantage over the visitors. However, India is also booming with confidence after securing a draw in the 3rd Test.
