The iconic Ashes 2023 finally ended in a thrilling 2-2 draw after hosts England made a stunning comeback from losing the first two Tests to Australia. Apart from misfortune with the weather in Manchester, the Three Lions displayed a sensational performance in the last three matches to make this Ashes one of the iconic editions ever played in this century-old rivalry.
England won the fifth and last Test by 49 runs to level the series with a scoreline of 2-2 from trailing at 2-0. Star pacers from both teams, Mitchell Starc and Chris Woakes won the Player of the Series awards for their amazing outings in the series.
Speaking of the action of the fifth Test at the Oval, the visiting skipper Pat Cummins won the toss and asked England to bat first. Riding on a brilliant performance from Starc alongside Josh Hazlewood and Todd Murphy, the Aussies managed to bundle up Ben Stokes’ men for 283 runs in the first innings. England made a brilliant comeback and their pace attack scalped 8 Australian wickets, before eventually bowling them out for 295 runs.
Stuart Broad gets fairytale ending to his Test career
Responding to Australia’s 12-run lead, England posted a strong total of 395 runs in the second innings, owing to crucial individual knocks from former skipper Joe Root (91 runs) and opener Zak Crawley (73 runs). Apart from these two, Ben Duckett and skipper Ben Stokes also contributed with 42 runs each followed by a brilliant knock of 78 runs from wicketkeeper-batter Jonny Bairstow. Mitchell Starc and Todd Murphy scalped 4 wickets each in the second innings.
Chasing a mammoth target of 384, the visitors got off to a brilliant start with a century partnership between openers David Warner and Usman Khawaja. But once the opening pair departed, they started losing wickets in regular intervals and eventually lost the match by 49 runs. The ‘man of the moment’ Stuart Broad who was playing his last international match, crucially scalped the last two wickets for England to take England over the line.
The fans were elated following the conclusion of a nail-biting Ashes edition. They took to Twitter to express their emotions over the quality of Test cricket that was displayed.
