Southern Brave trashed Welsh Fire to win the 22nd match of the Hundred 2022 by nine wickets. A brilliant bowling display followed by dominating batting performance by the Brave ensured that they were on the winning side. With this win, Southern Brave registered their second win of the season, while Welsh Fire are still looking for their first win.
Batting first, the Welsh Fire did not have the best start as they lost a few early wickets. Jacob Bethell (0), Josh Cobb (0), and Ben Duckett (0) were all dismissed for a team score of just one in the first seven balls of the game. George Garton, on the other hand, was at the top of his game for the Brave.
The Cobb-led team continued to lose wickets, and no batter was able to make a significant contribution to the team. Leus du Plooy, with his score of 37 runs in 25 balls, was the highest run-scorer of the innings. Matthew Critchley was the second-highest scorer with 32 runs in 19 balls. Fire managed to score 129 runs in the first innings.
Garton was the leading wicket-taker for the bowling team, with a spell of 7/3 in 15 balls. James Fuller also got two wickets in the game, while Michael Hogan and Jake Lintott each took one. The chase for the Southern Brave was very comfortable as the openers, Paul Stirling and Quinton de Kock, got off to a flying start.
The duo wasted no time getting started and putting runs on the board. Stirling was going all-out on one end while De Kock was controlling the other. The former completed his half-century in the partnership, but De Kock fell prey to Dwaine Pretorius right before crossing the line. He scored run-a-ball 37 in the innings. The Irishman, on the other hand, was unbeaten on 74 runs in 42 balls.
Southern Brave easily won the match by nine wickets and 18 balls. George Garton was named match hero for his match-winning spell with the ball.
