Lucknow met Delhi in the 45th match of the Indian T20 League 2022 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday. Deciding to bat first after winning the toss in the day game, Lucknow looked to get a quick start. KL Rahul and Quinton de Kock managed to do that, but De Kock (23) couldn't convert the start into a big score. Shardul Thakur got the breakthrough in the fifth over of the innings.
Post that, Deepak Hooda, along with the captain, stitched a valuable partnership. The pair played aggressively and kept the run rate around 10 most of the time. Both scored half-centuries and added 95 runs to the second-wicket stand. Thakur, eventually, got rid of both the well-set batters.
Hooda (52 runs off 34 balls) fell in the 15th over, followed by Rahul's wicket (77 runs off 55 balls) in the 19th. The likes of Marcus Stoinis (17) and Krunal Pandya (9) remained unbeaten to help Lucknow reach 195/3 at the end of the first innings.
The Men in Blue and Red had a rough start to their chase. They were reduced to 13 for two in first three overs as both Prithvi Shaw and David Warner went back to the hut early. Mitchell Marsh and Rishabh Pant then played shots all over the field, amassing 60 runs in only 25 balls.
Marsh (37), however, lost his wicket in the eighth over. Replays, though, showed that the ball did not take the edge before going into the keeper's gloves, but the umpire ruled him out, and Marsh did not review it.
Rovman Powell and Pant then built a short partnership, thereby continuing Delhi's momentum. Pant (44), who was looking solid at the crease, was dismissed by Mohsin Khan in the 13th over, leaving Delhi in all sorts of trouble. The equation later came down to 76 runs needed in last in seven overs.
Powell (35) kept the hopes alive with some powerful shots but was, eventually, dismissed in the 17th over. Axar Patel (42) and Kuldeep Yadav (16) fought hard with the bat and got Delhi extremely close to the target. But, in the end, they fell short of 6 runs.
Lucknow, as a result, defeated Delhi by six runs in the 45th match of the Indian T20 League 2022, and, with that, gained two points. KL Rahul and Co. now moves to the second spot on the points table.
