Aakash Chopra finds it slightly disturbing that Yuzvendra Chahal has never been considered for the Indian Test Cricket Team. The commentator shared his thoughts as a reply to a fan question on a video from his YouTube channel.
Although Yuzvendra Chahal has the skills needed for the Test Cricket format, he has never before been considered for it. The Indian team selectors do not think he is the right choice for red-ball cricket. Chopra stated that he is slightly disturbed by this as he believes Chahal has the intelligence, speed, and accuracy as a bowler and would do well in the Test format.
Chahal has played for India in the One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is)
He has represented India in 48 T20Is and 54 ODIs where he picked up 62 and 92 wickets respectively. In fact, he was the first Indian cricketer to take a six-wicket haul in a T20I.
Yuzvendra has not only proved himself in these formats but has also had an excellent record in first-class cricket. He represents Haryana in Indian domestic cricket. He has played in 31 first-class cricket matches. In those matches, he managed to take 84 wickets with a bowling average of 33.21. However, since 2019 Chahal has not played in first-class Cricket.
Chopra was also asked about Chahal’s less than impressive performance in the first part of IPL 2021. The former Indian batsman stated that it is not possible to identify the exact cause for the below-par performance. Although he bowled well enough, he was unable to take many wickets. The 30-year-old only managed to take 4 wickets across the seven matches he played for RCB in IPL 2021.
This change in performance could be attributed to the different ways in which he has been utilized by the RCB. He had an average of 8.26 runs per over. Mostly, he did not even bowl for the full 4 overs.
However, Chopra believes that Yuzvendra is capable of redeeming himself in the second half of IPL 2021. Phase 2 of the league is set to be held in the UAE in September-October.
