Aakash Chopra opposed the idea of England and New Zealand being declared joint winners in case of a stalemate. The ICC announced the playing conditions for the WTC championships final between India and New Zealand. The two sides are supposed to share the trophy if the match ends in a draw. The WTC final would be held in Southampton from 18th June.
Aakash Chopra opined that it seemed wrong for a two-year-long tournament to end without an absolute winner. He understands the desire not to have a tie-breaker. But he opposed the idea of a shared trophy as it personally leaves a bitter taste in his mouth.
Chopra also questioned the use of reserve day only when the match is affected due to bad weather. He believes that the reserve day should also be put to use when a team is on the victory margin on the final day. But he did acknowledge that the match would probably not go beyond five days. If the pitch is even slightly green, everything would work according to schedule.
Aakash Chopra suggested some changes for future editions of WTC
Firstly, the match should be played as long as a definite winner is not decided. There should be 2 days for reserve instead of just one. If there is a sixth day for reserve, then a seventh day should also be added. He wants to bring back the Timeless Test to help decide a definite winner.
Secondly, he wants the WTC final to be a three-match Test series. It would help decide the most deserving winner of the championship. It is not justified to play just one test in a foreign country after a two-year-long tournament to decide the winner. There should be three matches. If there is no clear winner after the first 2 matches, only then the 3rd match should be played.
At present, Chopra wants the team with a higher ranking in the league phase to be declared the winner in case of a draw. He further added that he is not favoring that idea just because India is currently occupying the top spot in the league.
