Cricket commentator Aakash Chopra has chosen 3 players whom he believes failed to impact in the limited-overs series against Australia. These players are Shreyas Iyer, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Sanju Samson. Chopra believes that Samson failed to capitalize upon the opportunity given to him.
In 3 T20I matches, Samson only managed to put up 48 runs in total. Chopra believes that T20 is a cruel format and that one might miss out if he fails to perform. Samson has been consistent with his IPL performances throughout his career. However, he has not impressed much in the international format. Once Rohit Sharma is back, Chopra feels that Samson might not get a chance to start for the Indian side.
Chopra picks Chahal and Iyer as two other big disappointments
Two other players who have come under Aakash Chopra’s scrutiny are Yuzvendra Chahal and Shreyas Iyer. Talking about Chahal, Chopra felt that the RCB bowler had a substandard limited-overs series. Chahal only impressed once, winning the Man of the Match award in the 1st T20I after coming on for Jadeja. Chahal picked up 3 wickets in that match and gave away only 25 runs.
Apart from that, Chahal was way too expensive in the ODI and T20I series. With an economy of over 10 in the last 2 T20Is, Chahal failed to impact in the later stage of the T20 series.
Chahal was also very expensive in the ODI series. In the 1st ODI, Chahal conceded 89 runs in 10 overs. This was Chahal’s most expensive ODI spell ever. With Shardul Thakur doing well with the ball, Chahal will need to buckle up in order to get a chance to play. Chopra, however, backs Chahal to make a comeback soon.
The last player who Chopra felt was a huge disappointment was Shreyas Iyer. The DC captain was outstanding in IPL 2020. In 17 matches, Iyer smashed an impressive 519 runs. Iyer has been quite a consistent performer in IPL. However, he is yet to contribute significantly to the Indian team in the international format.
As per Chopra, Shreyas did not contribute a single significant knock in the limited-overs series against Australia. With players such as Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav, and Rishabh Pant waiting for their turn, things look bleak for Iyer. India will look to take positives ahead of its 1st Test against Australia at the Adelaide Oval. The 1st Test will start next week on 17 December.
