Aakash Chopra stated that 5-time champions Mumbai Indians will have the most destructive opening pair in IPL 2021. Led by Rohit Sharma, MI will be the favorites going into the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League. Sharma will likely open alongside South African cricketer Quinton de Kock. Ishan Kishan is also available. Kishan was MI’s best batsman in the 13th edition of the IPL and recently had a superb outing with India in the international format.
MI’s opening batting options were on fire in IPL 2020. Ishan Kishan was MI’s highest run-getter, with 516 runs in 14 games. He also hit the most sixes (29) in the same season. With such staggering stats, it will be questionable if Kishan does not open for the 5-time champions. Talking about Quinton de Kock, the South African opener also had a superb outing in IPL 2020. In 16 games, de Kock smashed a total of 503 runs, with a blistering strike rate of 140+. Clearly, Mumbai’s opening batting firepower looks unstoppable at the moment.
Rohit Sharma, however, did not have the best IPL outings last year. In 12 games, he managed to score only 332 runs, way below his opening counterparts. However, Sharma is expected to go all guns blazing this season. It seems that Chopra’s selection is justified after all.
Aakash Chopra talks about other IPL 2021 opening batting options
After MI, Aakash Chopra stated that DC has the most explosive opening batting pair. The opening partnership composed by Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw could run riot against the IPL bowlers. Dhawan was quite sensational last season. In 17 matches, Dhawan amassed a total of 618 runs.
Following DC in the list of hard-hitting openers is KXIP. If KL Rahul opens alongside Chris Gayle, we would witness some extravagant batting. KL Rahul was the Orange Cap winner last season. Gayle, meanwhile, has been a consistent hard-hitting batsman throughout the course of his IPL career.
IPL 2021 will start on April 9, with the Royal Challengers Bangalore taking the 5-time champions Mumbai Indians. For RCB, captain Virat Kohli will open alongside the young sensation Devdutt Padikkal. With de Kock likely to be unavailable, Rohit Sharma and Ishan Kishan might open for the Mumbai Indians.
