Former legendary Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar is known for his blunt analyses and comments on modern-day cricket, especially Indian cricket. Recently, he has come up with another fresh statement on the future of the captaincy of the national side of Team India. Gavaskar happened to pick the young batter Shubman Gill and star all-rounder Axar Patel as the contenders to be considered for the role of vice-captain in West Indies Tests.

He also felt that players including the likes of Shubman Gill and Axar Patel could be the future of the captaincy of the national side of India.

“One is Shubman Gill and the other is Axar Patel because Axar comes in leaps and bounds, he just gets better every match. Giving him the responsibility as vice-captain will make them think. So, these are the two candidates in my view," said Gavaskar to Sports Today.

Although this statement from the 1983 World Cup winner batter drew a lot of opposite reactions and responses from Indian cricket fans. Some of the fans targeted Gavaskar for ignoring the other star players like Ravindra Jadeja and a few others as well. Fans took to the micro-blogging site Twitter to come up with some sort of trolling remarks for Gavaskar.

Here’s how fans reacted:

Apart from his stand for Gill and Axar Patel, the former batting great also named some other Indian youngsters who could be reckoned with by management in the future.

"If there are others, somebody like Ishan Kishan, once he cements his place in the team. He can come in the reckoning as well,” stated the 73-year-old.

“There is nothing wrong in having him <Ajinkya Rahane> as the vice-captain, but a missed opportunity to groom a young player. At least, tell a young player that we are looking at you as a future captain. So, he starts to think as a future leader,” he added later.
