Team India had a disappointing year in 2022 as they failed to win any major tournaments despite being one of the favorites. First, they lost in the Asia Cup and then, in the 20-20 World Cup in Australia. Many top players like Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja got injuries that ruled them out of those tournaments. On 30 December, Rishabh Pant met with a horrible road accident. Now, he might miss the upcoming big matches for the Men in Blue.

So, on 1 January 2023, the Indian Cricket Board arranged a performance review meeting in Mumbai. The Board wanted to discuss the results from 2022 and the future steps for the betterment of Indian Cricket. Regarding that meeting, the Board issued an official statement that read: “The Indian Cricket Board on Sunday convened the review meeting of Team India (Senior Men) in Mumbai. The meeting was attended by the Board President Mr. Roger Binny, Honorary Secretary Mr. Jay Shah, Indian Captain Mr. Rohit Sharma, Team India (Senior Men) Head Coach Mr. Rahul Dravid, Head of Cricket (NCA) Mr. VVS Laxman and Chairman of Senior Men Selection Committee Mr. Chetan Sharma.”

As per reports, one franchise official slammed the Board for their willingness to rest some players for the Indian T20 League 2023

Several key decisions were taken in that meeting. First, the Board shortlisted 20 players for the 2023 ODI World Cup. These players will only play in all the upcoming ODIs in 2023. For selection criteria, Yo-Yo Test and Dexa Test have been considered. Regarding the fitness of players, VVS Laxman-led National Cricket Academy (NCA) will work with Indian T20 League franchises to monitor players’ fitness, especially those who have a history of injuries. In an official statement, the Board further added: “Keeping in mind the Men’s FTP and preparations for 2023 World Cup, the NCA will work in tandem with the Indian T20 League Franchisee to monitor the targeted Indian players participating in the Indian T20 League 2023.”

However, according to the reports in the Indian Express, a franchise official of the Indian T20 League slammed the Board. “The Board cannot ask the franchises to rest a player for any Indian T20 League game. They can of course monitor the workload and ask for any data to be shared, but they cannot fix a cap and say a certain player can play only X number of matches or can bowl only X number of overs,” the franchise official told. However, after such reports, fans were not happy and they shared their views on social media platforms.
