In a recent piece of news for the Kolkata fans, the team management has appointed the star middle-order batter Nitish Rana as the captain of the team; he will lead Kolkata in the upcoming edition of the Indian T20 League. The star batter was recently in action in First-Class and List-A cricket in Indian domestic cricket.
Although this decision of appointing Rana as captain has drawn different kinds of reactions from the fans of Kolkata. Some of the fans opined that it should have been the star Indian pace bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur to be appointed as the skipper for the 16th edition. While some of the fans reckoned it as the lowest point for Kolkata in the history of the league so far.

Talking furthermore about Nitish Rana’s appointment as captain, the Kolkata franchise made it official with their statement in the official note.
“Kolkata today announced that Nitish Rana would captain the side in the absence of Shreyas Iyer, who is recovering from a back injury. While we are hopeful that Shreyas will recover and participate at some stage in the ITL 2023 edition, we feel fortunate that Nitish, with captaincy experience having led his state side in white-ball cricket and the ITL experience he has had with Kolkata since 2018, will do a great job,” reads the official statement from Kolkata management.
“We are also confident that under Head Coach Chandrakant Pandit and the support staff, he will get all the support needed off the field, and the highly experienced leaders in the squad will provide all the support that Nitish may need on the field. We wish him the best in his new role and Shreyas a full and speedy recovery,” the statement adds further.
Kolkata will start their run in the 2023 edition of the tournament with their first match against Shikhar Dhawan’s Punjab; Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali will host this tournament opener for both Kolkata and Punjab on Saturday, the 1st of April.
