The 15th edition of the Hockey World Cup is going on in Bhubaneswar and Rourkela. The tournament kicked off on 13 January 2023. However, fans were hoping to see the Men in Blue in top form in this tournament to win the title. Speaking of their first match, India took on Spain and defeated them 2-0.

After that convincing victory, fans were in an ecstatic mood. Then, in the second game, they locked horns with England. But, the Men in Blue faced the consequences of missing a lot of chances. Hence, the game ended in a 0-0 draw. So, fans were eagerly waiting to see a better performance from them in the last group match against Wales.

India defeated Wales 4-2 in the Hockey World Cup 2023

On 19 January, they took on Wales and defeated them 4-2. Akashdeep Singh scored a brace while Harmanpreet Singh and Shamsher Singh scored once. After this win, team India finished in the second spot in Pool D. They managed only seven points in three matches with two wins and a draw. England topped the group with the same points. But, due to having more goal difference, they finished above. Teammate Mandeep Singh heaped praises for Akashdeep as he said: “I’ve played with him for over ten years now and we share a great relationship on the pitch. We understand each other well and he’s a great teammate to have.”

After the match, Akashdeep  Singh said:  “I don’t look at individual performance. The team did their job out there and we got our win.” Regarding India’s engine in midfield, Hardik Singh, coach Reid also shared: “He’s progressing well. We didn’t play him today but we will take a decision on the 21st.” However, skipper Harmanpreet Singh said: “we are never happy with our performance. We know we can always get better and we will aim for that.” Now, they will be in action again on 22 January against New Zealand in the crossover.
