Virat Kohli struck a brilliant century to guide India to a 67-run victory over Sri Lanka in the first of three one-day internationals in Guwahati on Tuesday, January 10, 2023. Kohli scored 113 runs, hitting 12 fours and a six in his 87-ball display. It was the former captain's 45th ODI hundred and he is only four short of Sachin Tendulkar's all-time record.
Virat and Rohit Sharma made notable jumps in the latest Men's ODI Player Rankings. Kohli moved to the no.6 spot in the ODI rankings while Rohit made a jump to the 8th position. In the T20I rankings charts, Suryakumar Yadav continues his reign at the top of the batting charts, driven by his brilliant century in the third T20I against Sri Lanka. Kohli praised Surya for his brilliant form in the shortest format, who was interviewing him following the Guwahati ODI
"What you are doing in the last year is something that is very special. Something that I have not seen before, You are creating a different template. You are creating a different energy. I can see in the crowds when you go. There is genuine love and genuine affection because of the way you are playing. It is amazing to see and I wish you all the best," Kohli was quoted as saying by NDTVsports.
My preparation and intent always remain the same: Virat Kohli
During the post-match presentation, Virat talked about his brilliant inning in the 1st ODI and said that his intent was same as always. He said that you should play every game like it’s your last. He said, he is not going to play forever, he is just enjoying playing the game.
“I don't think there was anything different. My preparation and intent always remain the same. I thought I was hitting the ball nicely. It was close to the template I play with, I understood we needed an extra 25-30 runs. I tried to understand the conditions in the second half. Tried to get a comfortable total for us on the board. The one thing I learned was desperation doesn't get you anywhere. You do not need to complicate things.” Kohli said in the post-match presentation.
“You go out there and play without any fear, I can't hold on to things. You have to play for the right reasons and almost play every game like it's your last and just be happy about it. The game is going to move on. I am not going to play forever, I am in a happy space and enjoying my time playing.” He added.
Here's how the fans reacted to Kohli's massive gain in Men's ODI rankings:
