Jonny Bairstow, an English batsman, was furious after a peculiar Lord's decision on Day 5 went against him. Alex Carey, the wicketkeeper for Australia, ran out Bairstow in an unusual way as England attempted to chase down 371 runs at Lord's. In an odd turn of events, Bairstow was run out during the 52nd over on Day 5 and lost his wicket. The England hitter who was responsible for keeping wickets dodged a Cameron Green ball and left the crease believing the over had over and the ball was dead. Carey, however, was proactive behind his stumps as under-armed the wickets, which confused Bairstow.

After much consideration, the umpire opted to eject Bairstow because the ball wasn't dead. After making 10 runs from 22 balls, the 33-year-old retired, and England lost its sixth wicket at Lord's. The audience began screaming "cheat, cheat" as soon as Bairstow was fired to express their displeasure with the choice.

Former players give their views on the controversial decision

Several previous cricket players voiced their opinions on the subject following Bairstow's dismissal, with former England captain Eoin Morgan claiming Carey did well. The 2019 World Cup-winning captain said, “Bairstow ducks, the ball is still active. He goes walking down the wicket and is out. It's smart work by Carey.”

Mark Taylor, a former captain of Australia, defended Carey and said that although if it didn't look good, he made the right choice. He said, “Carey doesn't wait for Bairstow to walk out, he's going to do that regardless. It doesn't look good and people aren't going to be happy about it, but it's the right decision.”

Glenn McGrath, a renowned Australian bowler, said that Carey had already thrown the ball towards the stumps before Bairstow began to move. The retired legendary fast bowler said, “It all depends on when the umpire called 'over' then. Carey threw at the stumps even before Bairstow was walking.”

178 runs were needed for England to win at Lord's and tie the five-match Ashes 2023 series after Bairstow's dismissal. Ben Stokes took it into his own hands as he smashed Cameron Green for 25 runs during the 56th over of the innings which stated that England are not going to bow down easily.
