On 18 January 2023, team India locked horns with New Zealand in Hyderabad. It was the first game of the three-match home ODI series. After winning the ODI series against the Lankans comfortably, the Men in Blue were looking for another series win. However, Shubman Gill impressed everyone once again in the series. 

Before the Sri Lanka series, skipper Rohit Sharma confirmed that Shubman Gill will play as the opener ahead of Ishan Kishan despite the southpaw batter scoring a scintillating double hundred in Bangladesh. So, fans were very eager to see the young batter’s performance in the series. Shubman Gill had a great 2022 year.

Shubman Gill scored his third ODI ton in the first match against the Kiwis

In both the ODI series in Zimbabwe and West Indies, he was the player of the series. He was the highest run-scorer in both those series. So, all eyes were on him once again, especially in the context of teh upcoming 2023 50-over World Cup. But, Gill did not disappoint his fans as he became the second-highest run-scorer in the series. He scored 207 runs in three innings, at an average of 69. Gill also scored a fifty and a century. So, it was another opportunity for the right-handed batter when the Men in Blue took on the Kiwis in Hyderabad.

Team India won the toss and opted to bat first. Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill came out to open the innings. However, both Rohit and Kohli failed to score big but Gill remained there. Finally, he scored his third ODI ton off just 87 balls. During the innings, he also became the fastest Indian batter to score 1000 runs in just 19 matches. So, fans went crazy after seeing the batter in such a top-notch form in this format for India. After the end of 40 overs, team India were at 251 runs for five wickets. Shubman Gill was batting on 134* runs off 113 balls, including 18 fours and two sixes.
