All Test matches to carry same points per win in 2021-23 WTC: Geoff Allardice

The ICC interim CEO, Geoff Allardice, stated that the governing body would stick with the percentage-of-points-won method to rank teams. This will be followed in the next cycle of the World Test Championship (WTC). In the last cycle, the overall points for each series were 120. Later the points system was changed to the percentage of points for ranking the teams. The decision was taken due to the scheduled disruption following the COVID-19 pandemic. However, Geoff Allardice has highlighted that the same points will be available for each game, and the teams involved will be judged on the percentage of those points they win rather than the total points.

The winners of WTC will take home USD 1.6 million along with the ICC Test Championship Mace

The winning team of the much-awaited World Test Championship final will take home USD 1.6 million along with the ICC Test Championship Mace. On the other hand, the losing team will get USD 800,000 for finishing second in the nine-team competition. The competition was played over a near two-year cycle. The prize money for the team finishing third in the ICC WTC points table is USD 450,000. The fourth team in the standings will receive USD 350,000, and the one that ends fifth gets USD 200,000. Lastly, the remaining four teams will get USD 100,000 each.

Meanwhile, the final clash between India and New Zealand is going to take place at the Hampshire Bowl in Southampton. It is scheduled to be played from 18 to 22 June, with 23 June set aside as the Reserve Day. The ICC ensures that if the match results in a draw, both the teams will be crowned as joint winners. In addition, there will be allocation of a Reserve Day to make up for any lost time during the regular days of the Final. All these decisions were made in June 2018, before the inception of the ICC WTC.

The decision of organising a reserve Day is to ensure five full days of play. Thus, this will only be used if lost playing time cannot be recovered through the standard provisions of making up lost time each day. There will also be no extra day’s play if a positive result is not achieved after five full days of the game. In such a case, the match will be declared a draw.
