The Ashes series is always a heated affair. The rivalry between England and Australia is considered to be the oldest Test Cricket rivalry in the world. And, these games are never without any drama. Ashes 2023 has lived up to its reputation. The controversial dismissal of Jonny Bairstow on the final day of the Lord’s Test in Ashes 2023 led to a full-fledged affair with experts and fans extending opinions through the media.
Following the controversial stumping by Alex Carey, the Australian team had to face boos and insults every time they went through the Lord’s long room during breaks. Several English fans and some Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) members indulged in a verbal spat with Australia opener Usman Khawaja. The incident was later dubbed the Lord’s long room incident.
‘The old lady just wanted to apologise to all Australian cricketers…’ – Nathan Lyon
Recently, Australia’s spin ace Nathan Lyon who was present during the incident and participated actively in his teammate’s defence revealed an untold side of the story. He recently broke the silence on the matter and explained how everything transpired in a few seconds into a massive controversy. "There were a few Australian guys and a few English guys in the lunchroom and I hobbled up on my crutches and stood in the middle of it and tried to calm things down a little bit," Lyon said at the Willow Talk Cricket Podcast, co-hosted by former Australia wicket-keeper Brad Haddin.
He then shared a heart-warming story about an old English lady who came up to Lyon in tears to apologise on behalf of all English fans and MCC members. "I actually had an older lady come up to me in tears, an English lady in tears from the main members' area, and she said 'I've got to go home. I just want to apologise to you Australian cricketers for the way everyone has reacted inside the Lord's", Lyon said on the same Podcast.
