Sri Lanka and India locked horns in what was a must-win game for the defending champions (India) of the ongoing Asia Cup 2022. The Lankan Lions won the toss and elected to bowl first on a dry wicket in Dubai. India lost the wickets of vice-captain KL Rahul and former skipper Virat Kohli inside the powerplay. At 13/2, the likes of skipper Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar stitched a partnership of 97.

Sharma dominated the opposition with the bat despite the wicket being on the slower side. He scored 72 off 41 balls including five fours and four sixes. The right-hander was well supported by Yadav who scored 34 off 29 balls including a six and a four. They got out in the space of two overs. The likes of all-rounder Hardik Pandya (117), wicketkeeper batter Rishabh Pant (17), and Ravichandran Ashwin (15*) helped the team reach 173/8 at the end of the innings.

For the home team (Sri Lanka), left-arm pacer Dilshan Madushanka took three wickets. On the other hand, skipper Dasun Shanaka and all-rounder Chamika Karunaratne took two each and Maheesh Theekshana took one.

Sri Lanka chased down the target due to their resilience

In reply, the five-time winners had a great start as openers Pathum Nissnaka and wicketkeeper batter Kusal Medis scored 97 runs for the first wicket. Both players scored half-centuries each to keep the defending champion under pressure. After 11 overs, it looked like the Lankan Lions will chase down the target easily. However, quick wickets of Mendis and Charith Asalanka in the 12th over of the game bought Rohit Sharma's men back in the game.

In the next couple of overs, Dasun Shanka'e men lost two more wickets and the team was struggling at 110/4. At this stage, the team needed another 64 runs in six overs. The likes of skipper Dasun Shanaka and Bhanuka Rajpaksa stitched an unbeaten partnership of 64 runs to win the game by six wickets and one ball to spare. With this win, Sri Lanka qualified for the final for the first time after 2014.
