India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka among other Asian teams participate in the Asia Cup, a trophy to determine the continental champion. The last season of the tournament was played in 2018, after which the organisers failed to stage the tournament due to various reasons. It was set to be played in 2020 but was cancelled due to the pandemic. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC) then decided to host the event in June 2021 but was again postponed as India qualified for the Test championship final.

The path for the 2022 edition looks clear as the dates for the tournament have been announced. Sri Lanka will host the tournament from 27th of August. The final will be played on the 11th of September. The qualifiers will be played before that, from 20th August. Notably, Pakistan was set to host the tournament but was later stripped of the rights as India would not have travelled to the country. The tournament will be played in the T20 format.

Six teams will participate in the tournament. India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and a qualifying team will make a cut to the league. UAE and Kuwait, who progressed from 2020 ACC Western Region T20, and Singapore and Hong Kong, who progressed from the 2020 ACC Eastern Region T20, will compete in the qualifiers.

India has been the most dominant team in Asia Cup history. They have won the championship seven times in 14 seasons, since its start in 1984. Sri Lanka is the second most successful team, having won five titles.  The last edition of the tournament was won by India in 2018. They defeated Bangladesh by 3 wickets to get their hands on the 7th championship title.
