Asia Cup

The Pakistan Cricket Board has recently announced that the 15th edition of the Asia Cup has been postponed to 2022. The tournament was planned to be held last year in Pakistan. Later, the venue for the tournament was changed from Pakistan to Sri Lanka. The contest was to be played in September of 2020 to prepare for the T20 World Cup in Australia. However, it was then further moved forward as the T20 World Cup got postponed to 2021. Due to the pandemic, the BCCI also decided to host the Indian Premier League (IPL) in September-November 2020 in UAE.

India got the rights to host the T20 World Cup, whereas Asia Cup was supposed to be played in June. But the Pakistan Cricket Board has now declared that the competition has been postponed once again. The tournament is now going to take place in 2022. This can mainly be because India has qualified for the final of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC). The final is going to be played from June 18-22 at the Rose Bowl in Southampton. Team India will play against Kane Williamson-led New Zealand in the final. Considering this, there won’t be much time to host the Asia Cup as the IPL 2021 will also end on May 30.

India is the current champion and has won the title seven times

The last season of the tournament took place back in the year 2018. The competition was initially scheduled to be held in India, but the Asian Cricket Council later shifted the venue to the UAE. The officials had to change the venue after Pakistan stated their discontentment, citing the non-issuance of visas to other sports athletes. The Indian cricket team had won the last edition of the tournament by defeating Bangladesh in the final. The other teams which participated in the mega event were – Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Hong Kong, and Afghanistan. With the victory, India further extended their supremacy in the continental championship. No other nation has managed to win the tournament more than India (7).

The maiden edition of the Asia Cup took place in the year 1984, which was also won by India. Sri Lanka is the second most successful team in the competition with five wins, whereas Pakistan has won the title twice. With the tournament now postponed to 2022, the Asian teams would miss out on getting a good preparation ahead of the T20 World Cup.
