India locked horns with Uzbekistan in their campaign opener of the Men’s Hockey Competition in the ongoing Asian Games 2023. Riding on the brilliant collective performances of Lalit, Varun, Mandeep, and Abhishek guided India to a convincing win of 16-0 against Uzbekistan to strengthen their hopes of a gold medal and straight qualification to the Olympics 2023.
Lalit scored the first goal for India in a penalty corner during the first half of the match followed by Varun’s goal which doubled India’s lead from 1-0 to 2-0. Later, Abhishek and Mandeep came up with two brilliant goals which made India’s score 4-0 followed by a second goal smashed by Lalit and two consecutive goals from Mandeep to take India’s lead at the score of 7-0 at halftime.
India became more ruthless in the second half and smashed nine goals to end up winning the match by a massive margin of 16-0, starting their campaign with a win in the Men’s Hockey Competition of the ongoing Asian Games 2023.
If India win a gold medal in the Asian Games 2023 hockey competition, they will qualify directly to the Paris Olympics in 2024. Currently, they are with Japan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Singapore, and Uzbekistan in Pool A of the tournament.
India eyeing their next assignments, including clash against arch-rivals Pakistan
Now, Craig Fulton’s side will take on Singapore in their next match of the campaign against Singapore on Tuesday, September 26. Following that, they’ll be playing against Malaysia and the arch-rivals Pakistan on September 29 and October 1, respectively.
Speaking of the Indian contingent’s performances in the ongoing Asian Games 2023, they have won two medals (one silver and one bronze) in shooting, alongside 3 medals (two silver and one bronze) in rowing. Ashi Chouksey, Mehuli Ghosh, and Ramita’s trio won the silver medal in the Women’s 10 m air rifle team.
On the other hand, Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh won the silver medal in Rowing’s Men’s’ lightweight double sculls.
