Australia have announced a strong 15-member squad for the upcoming Ashes series set to begin on December 8. Wicketkeeper batter Alex Carey is named in the squad for the first two Test matches. The southpaw has displayed solid form in the Sheffield Shield for Australia in the past two years. The 30-year-old also has a huge amount of experience playing for Australia in the white-ball formats.
Following Tim Paine’s resignation due to off-field controversy and his announcement to take an indefinite break from the game, the wicketkeeper batter's position garnered much attention. Few backed uncapped wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis’s inclusion, while some felt Matthew Wade should be in the team due to his recent good form and experience.
Australian chairman of selectors George Bailey, however, is of the opinion that Carey’s white-ball exposure at the international level and his superb record in Sheffield Shield was good enough to earn a place in the Ashes squad.
“Alex has been a regular member of the national side in white-ball cricket, particularly in the one-day game. He is an excellent cricketer and a fine individual who will bring many great strengths into the team. He will be a very deserved holder of baggy green cap number 461," he said according to cricket.com.au.
Carey shot into the limelight during the Cricket World Cup in 2019. He was one of the bright spots during Australia’s semi-final finish in the showpiece event. The 30-year-old chipped in with vital contributions and helped the team finish the innings well. Test cricket is a different ball game altogether, and Carey is ready to make a mark during the high-octane Ashes series.
“I am incredibly humbled by this opportunity. It’s an exciting build-up for what is a huge series ahead. My focus is on preparing and playing my part in helping Australia secure the Ashes. I will be doing my absolute best to make them and our country proud," he said.
