Pakistan's 20-20 World Cup 2022 campaign kicks off on Sunday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. In the tournament opener, they will face archrivals Team India. This will be Babar Azam's second World Cup as captain of Pakistan, following his performance in the 20-20 World Cup 2022.
Already a star batter in multiple formats with numerous records to his name, Babar now has a chance to break former India captain MS Dhoni's spectacular record as a 20-20 World Cup skipper. Babar had finished the previous edition with the most runs. In Pakistan's run to the semi-finals, he scored 303 runs at 60.60, including four half-centuries.
It was the most runs scored by a captain in a single edition of the 20-20 World Cup, surpassing Sri Lanka legend Mahela Jayawardene's feat in 2012. His four half-centuries already make him the captain with the most fifty-plus scores in the tournament. He now has a chance to finish the 2022 tournament as the leading run-scorer as a captain, surpassing the legendary Dhoni.
Between 2007 and 2016, the former India captain led the Men in Blue in six editions. In 33 appearances, he scored 529 runs for India, a record for captains in the 20-20 World Cup. Babar is seventh on the list, 226 runs behind Dhoni. Kane Williamson of New Zealand, who is second on the list, has a chance to overtake Dhoni because he is 168 runs short of breaking the record.
