Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar feels if Pakistan skipper Babar Azam manages to keep himself fit and hungry, he could end up being one of the greatest players of all time. Gavaskar is impressed with the way Azam has gone about his business in the 20-20 World Cup, in a calm and composed manner. The 26-year-old has so far been spot on with his captaincy moves.
Pakistan have managed to win all five games in the Super 12 stage and Azam needs to be credited for the way he has handled the team. Before the 20-20 World Cup, there were a lot of off-field noises, which managed to hog the limelight. Azam though has managed to put those and doubters quiet by delivering well in the 20-20 World Cup. He has led from the front and scored 264 runs for the team.
“Pakistan have always been a mercurial side with some of the most naturally talented cricketers in the game. What has pulled them back is an excitable temperament,” Gavaskar wrote in a Khaleej Times column.
“This time with Babar Azam leading them, they are a lot calmer and a lot more game aware team. There is no doubt that Babar if he keeps himself fit and motivated is going to become one of the all-time greats of the game. What he can become is also one of the greatest captains that Pakistan has produced,” he added
Babar Azam has achieved tremendous success in his short career and is often compared with his Indian counterpart Virat Kohli. Though many believe that it is too early to draw comparisons between Kohli and Azam, they feel Azam is on the way to greatness.
