After almost two months of hard work, the finalists Perth Scorchers and Brisbane Heat faced off in the ultimate clash of the Big Bash League 2022/23 (BBL 12) on February 4, Saturday and to the surprise of fans, it was the Scorchers who won the game chasing down the target of 176 with 5 wickets to spare on the day.
To add more, it was the Heat who batted first after winning the toss and as one could predict, they got off to a great start despite losing Josh Brown early on in the innings with the batter scoring 25 runs to his name. However, a 100-run stand between Sam Heazlett and Nathan McSweeney saw the Heat bounce back and late fireworks from Max Bryant helped the team put on a great total on the board.
While Heazlett gathered a valuable 34 runs to the team’s total, McSweeney on the other hand, amassed 41 runs off 37 balls and put the Jimmy Peirson-led team on the front foot right away. However, it was Bryant’s 14-ball 31 that helped the team push the total further and make it a huge one for the Scorchers to chase it down.
Cooper Connolly becomes hero of the night against the Brisbane Heat
As far as the chase from the Scorchers are concerned, they got off to a decent start but were restricted to 54/3 in no time, putting the Heat on the front foot. The victory was within the grasp of Peirson and his men until fiery Australian Ashton Turner took the game away with a fighting fifty leaving the Heat’s pacers clueless despite having the game under their belt.
However, it was the 19-year-old Cooper Connolly who held the nerves in the end and took the Scorchers home with his quickfire 25. Fans, on the other hand, claimed that the Heat lost their way after Turner’s innings that changed the fortunes of the Scorchers’ team.
“Pretty good for me. Wanted to keep my shape and hit through the line. At 19 to have this crowd cheer for me, couldn’t have asked for anything better. Today was the best opportunity for all of us to chip in, a dream come true to win a Big Bash title,” Connolly was quoted as saying after clinching the title.

Cooper Connolly has played a fantastic hand there, brilliant innings especially given he's faced 11 deliveries in the tournament before that.
