Barcelona plans to fire Quique Setién at the end of the season

Bad results and poor performances will probably define Quique Setién's fate at the end of the season. The last chapter was written this weekend against Celta Vigo, as Barcelona lost two more points to Real Madrid. Only a significant change in the team could change the destiny of the Spanish coach, who can still dream of winning La Liga and Champions League this season.

Setién arrived at Camp Nou in January but was never a consensus choice among big players and club's structure. And the players have a strong influence in Barcelona. Stars like Lionel Messi or Gerard Piqué are the true dressing room leaders. Not pleasing one of these two is a big step towards exit.

In the case of Setién, in addition to being unhappy with the tactics, the players showed themselves unhappy with the training methodology, which they saw as too hands-on.

Poor performances were also taking away the confidence of the board. The Blaugrana signed a two-and-a-half-year contract, but it looks like Setién will only have a few more months at Camp Nou... if nothing changes.

The succession

According to sources close to Barcelona, Setién wasn´t the first choice. Ronald Koeman and Xavi rejected Barça's invitation. The former Catalan midfielder said that he was not prepared yet to lead a club with Barça´s ambitions. He asked for time, but the club may insist on signing him again this summer. Another solution could be the promotion of second-team coach Xavi Garcia Pimienta.

For now, the position still belongs to Setién. The performances in La Liga and the Champions League will decide the coach´s fate.
