The tension among the fans has risen further since BCCI handed over the ODI captaincy to Rohit Sharma. At first, Virat stepped down as the Indian T20 captain, Rohit was the obvious choice to take over. Later on, BCCI sacked Virat as the ODI captain and named Rohit as the leader in white-ball games. All this gave rise to many controversies, and Virat eventually stepped down as the Test captain as well. While Rohit leads the white-ball team, Test captaincy is still up for grabs.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are currently playing against West Indies in a three-match ODI series. This is the first time Rohit has taken over as the full-time captain. This also is the first time that Virat is playing under Rohit Sharma's captaincy. Rohit was appointed as the captain in the series against South Africa as well but had to miss out on the tour due to an injury.
