As Australia made a substantial total of 255/4 on the first day, Usman Khawaja, the Australian opener, scored his first Test century in India. He was aided and abetted by Cameron Green at the other end.

Usman Khawaja's hardwork and persistence in this Test match enabled him to become the first Australian batsman to reach a hundred in the current four-match Test series against India. Together with the athletic Australian all-rounder Cameron Green, who lost his wicket after reaching an incredible century, Khawaja made sure Australia appeared to be in good shape. On Day 2, the pair heaped additional agony on the Indians, nearly batting Team India out of the match.

In the morning session of the second day, the pair put together a mammoth stand of 208 runs for the fifth wicket, worrying India. Green left the game after scoring a significant 114, as Carey and Starc were cheaply dismissed. Khawaja seemed unmoved, though. With 180 runs to his credit, he decided to play for the side and assisted Australia in scoring 400 runs.

What record did Usman Khawaja break during the 4th Test in Ahmedabad?

In the meantime, Khawaja's tenacious innings against India helped him achieve a wonderful milestone. He established the record for the longest Test innings by an Australian hitter against India in India as he batted the 393rd delivery of his innings. He surpassed Graham Yallop's 44-year-old record, which he broke in Kolkata in 1979 when he faced 392 deliveries and made 167 runs. Steve Smith, the interim captain, is third on the list after facing 361 deliveries in Ranchi in 2017.

In the backdrop of the Test Championship, India need to win this match in order to advance to the final, set to be played at the Oval in England in June. India's qualifying will rely on the outcome of the New Zealand-Sri Lanka series, which also began yesterday, and depends whether Sri Lanka win or lose the Test match.
