BCCI is keen to host the T20 World Cup in India after almost five years. But the ongoing pandemic and tax predicaments can force BCCI to move it out of India.

The BCCI has been given time till 28th June to finalize a decision regarding the T20 World Cup. Moreover, BCCI would have the hosting rights irrespective of the venue, so they might move the tournament out of India.

A BCCI official confirmed the recent developments regarding the venue of the T20 World Cup. He stated that BCCI intends to sincerely try and hold the tournament in India. But if the covid-19 pandemic and the tax issues persist, the tournament has to be moved out. Although, the BCCI would retain the hosting rights irrespective of the venue.

The ICC had announced earlier that a final decision regarding the venue of the T20 World Cup would be taken at the end of this month. To make a sincere and well-thought-out decision, the BCCI was given some extra time. There is a lot of uncertainty around the covid-19 pandemic as well as the topic of tax exemption from the government. With no concrete solution in place, BCCI would likely move the tournament out from India.

Possible venues for the T20 World Cup include UAE and Oman

In case BCCI has to take the event out of India, then UAE and Oman are getting considered as a possible venues. According to some reports, the board has already forwarded the possibility of this decision to ICC. According to a BCCI official, it has been an internal discussion and a finalized decision is not yet made.

A report further detailed how the Indian cricket board plans to host IPL 2021 phase 2 and T20 World Cup in quick succession in UAE. Muscat would likely be used specifically for the preliminary rounds of the T20 World Cup. It would ensure that grounds in UAE are back in peak condition after being used for IPL 2021.

The BCCI had announced that IPL 2021 phase 2 would be held in the September-October window in UAE. The league had been canceled due to the COVID-19 breach in the secure bio bubble that the players lived in during the league.
